Read Media Factsheet #224 Understanding the Industrial Context of Radio. This will give you a wider perspective on industry contexts for radio with particular focus on the industry theorists (Hesmondhalgh, Curran & Seaton, Livingstone & Lunt). Answer the following questions:
1) Read the first two pages of the factsheet. How does the Factsheet argue that radio still has cultural significance in the digital age?
The factsheet shows that radio still has cultural significance due to the fact that Radio is always played in the cars and is accessible everywhere and through many of the radio hosts it allows for connection to built between the radio hosts and people listing at home
2) Look at the page 4 section on media theories. Briefly summarise the ideas of Curran and Seaton, Hesmondhalgh and Livingstone and Lunt.
Curran and Seaton: Media output is concentrated in the hands of a few.- elites are using horizontal integration to stop other companies of having free will.
David Hesmondalgh: The media put profit before creativity.- media only focus on making profit not pushing creativity or allowing creativity
Livingstone and Lunt:Media regulation should have a consumer-based approach.- Radio should be able to have innovation and competition and be able to be consumer based and different radio organisations should be able to fight over the consumer base to be their own indepdent fans
3) What is the definition of public service broadcasting?
refers to broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests.
4) Look at the list of eight key principles for BBC Radio on page 6 of the factsheet. Choose the three you think are most significant and explain why.
- Universal appeal – across the board the programming will have something for all an everyone.- I think that it's important to show that radio is diverse and is for everyone that different radio will do things that you will enjoy you just have to find them.
- Attention to minorities – inclusive and non-tokenistic programming. this is important so people understand that
